Beef Cattle Prices Soar as Crawford Livestock Market Sets 13 National Records

The beef cattle market reached unprecedented heights yesterday, as the Crawford Livestock Market in Crawford, Nebraska, shattered 13 national records amid a continuing surge in prices nationwide.

The single-day event saw a total of 39 barn records and 25 state records fall in addition to the 13 national benchmarks. Specifically, the auction achieved four top-ten all-time prices for cattle weighing between 500-599 pounds, six top-ten prices for those weighing 600-699 pounds, the sixth-highest price ever for 700-799 pound cattle at $425, and a historic second-highest price for 800-899 pound cattle at $401 – marking only the second time this weight class has exceeded $400 nationally. This price surge translates to potentially higher costs for consumers at the grocery store.

The dramatic increase in prices follows a period of significant challenges for producers, including severe droughts from 2020 to 2023 that decimated forage and drove up input costs. These conditions led many ranchers to reduce their herds, resulting in the lowest national cattle inventory since the 1950s, according to the USDA Economic Research Service. Despite these difficulties, demand for beef has remained steady, fueling the current market boom.

Similar record-breaking activity has been observed in other key livestock markets across the country, including Joplin, Missouri; Valentine, Nebraska; Pratt, Kansas; and Mitchell, South Dakota, all reporting record sales within the last month. With Nebraska currently leading the nation in prices for seven and eight-weight steers, experts anticipate the trend of record-setting sales will likely continue in the coming weeks. Market officials expect continued strong demand and limited supply to maintain upward pressure on cattle prices in the near future.
