North Dakota Teen with Heart Condition Has Wish to Visit Disney World Granted

A 13-year-old Bismarck, North Dakota, resident living with a heart condition will have his dream of a family trip to Disney World fulfilled thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the University of Mary community.

Finley received the surprise announcement yesterday evening during a special event at the University of Mary, initially believing he was attending the school’s Homecoming Captains vs. Crew game. The reveal came during a dunk contest, where he was told he had already won – a trip to Disney World in 45 days. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children diagnosed with critical illnesses, offering hope and joy during challenging times.

Finley’s family has strong ties to the University of Mary; his mother is a professor in the nursing program, his grandfather is a dean of education, and his aunt is a professor in the physical therapy program. “Finley is an incredible young man,” said Marcus Wagner, the director of intercollegiate athletics at the University of Mary. “He’s a 13-year-old boy here from Bismarck. Has deep ties to the University of Mary.” Sophia Janssen, the lead Wish Granter with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, added, “With his mom being a professor here…it just means a lot because it’s just such a wholesome, heartwarming night when he gets to see his wish and all that come true.”

Prior to the announcement, Finley enjoyed dinner with members of the University of Mary Marauders basketball team at his favorite restaurant, The Crow’s Nest. The University of Mary Athletics Department played a key role in orchestrating the surprise. Officials stated that arrangements for Finley and his family’s trip are already underway, and they are looking forward to seeing his wish come true.
