Latvia’s Patrīcija Eiduka finished just outside the top 20 at the World Cup sprint event in Finland on Saturday, securing 21st place in the freestyle competition. This result comes as the World Cup season continues to build momentum with upcoming stops in Norway and the United States.
Eiduka qualified with the 17th fastest time, completing the course in 3 minutes and 12.47 seconds, 9.57 seconds behind Sweden’s Jonna Sundling. She then placed fifth in her quarterfinal heat, which ultimately led to her 21st-place overall finish.
Sundling went on to win the event, besting fellow Swede Linn Svahn by 0.17 seconds in the final. Germany’s Coletta Rydzek rounded out the podium, finishing 0.84 seconds behind Sundling.
The Latvian men’s team struggled in the sprint competition, failing to advance from qualification. Niks Saulītis, Raimo Vīgants, and Lauris Kaparkalējs finished 60th, 61st, and 62nd respectively, all more than 13 seconds behind leader Johannes Klæbo.
Klæbo ultimately claimed victory in the men’s sprint, finishing 0.42 seconds ahead of his Norwegian teammate, Lars Hegen, in the final. France’s Jules Chabaud secured the third spot on the podium, trailing by 1.77 seconds.
Competition continues on Sunday with a 10-kilometer freestyle race with individual starts, scheduled to begin at 11:30 local time. The World Cup races are being broadcast live on Eurosport channels. Following the Finland event, the World Cup circuit will move to Drammen and Oslo in Norway, and then to Lake Placid in the United States.
