Cuba is grappling with a significant surge in mosquito-borne illnesses, with health officials confirming 33 deaths in recent months. The outbreak, impacting an estimated one-third of the island’s population, is placing additional strain on a healthcare system already challenged by a severe economic crisis.
According to Cuba’s Deputy Minister of Health, Carilda Peña, 12 of the fatalities were caused by dengue fever, while 21 were attributed to chikungunya. Notably, at least 21 of those who died were under the age of 18.
The recent deaths and the ongoing epidemic are exacerbating existing difficulties within Cuba’s healthcare infrastructure, which is facing widespread shortages of food, fuel, and essential medications due to the country’s economic struggles. These shortages are hindering efforts to control the spread of the diseases.
While dengue fever is endemic to Cuba, the situation has worsened due to limited resources and fuel availability, restricting the government’s ability to conduct widespread fumigation, maintain sanitation, and repair infrastructure. Chikungunya, previously rare in Cuba, has also seen a rapid increase in cases in recent months.
Currently, there is no specific treatment for chikungunya, a virus primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes – the same species responsible for spreading dengue and Zika viruses. The illness typically causes high fevers, rashes, and debilitating joint pain that can persist for months, sometimes leading to long-term disability, though fatalities are uncommon.
The highest infection rates are currently concentrated in Havana and Santiago, Cuba’s two largest cities. Last week alone, officials reported 5,717 new cases of chikungunya, though they acknowledge that the actual number of infections is likely much higher, as many patients do not seek medical attention or report their illness.
The situation highlights the global risk of mosquito-borne diseases, prompting the World Health Organization to issue an urgent call to action in July to prevent a repeat of the global chikungunya epidemic that occurred two decades ago. New outbreaks linked to the Indian Ocean region are now appearing in Europe and the Americas.
This outbreak underscores the importance of mosquito control measures and access to healthcare, particularly in regions facing economic and logistical challenges. Effective public health responses are crucial to mitigating the impact of these diseases and protecting vulnerable populations.
