Cuomo Pledges Crypto Focus in New York Mayoral Bid

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced yesterday a plan to position New York City as a leading global hub for technology and cryptocurrency, a move seen as a direct challenge to frontrunner Zohran Mamdani in the upcoming mayoral race.

Cuomo’s proposal, unveiled on Sunday, centers around the creation of a new Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) position within his administration. This senior role will be tasked with spearheading the city’s advancements in tech, including artificial intelligence and blockchain technology, and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors. “The next Mayor must make sure we’re also leading in the technologies that will define the next century — AI, blockchain, and biotech,” Cuomo stated. An accompanying Innovation Council, comprised of leaders in crypto, AI, and biotech, will advise the CIO on policy and consumer protection.

The announcement follows closely after current Mayor Eric Adams established the “nation’s first-ever” municipal office for crypto and blockchain, appointing Moises Rendon as its executive director. Adams, who recently withdrew from the mayoral race citing financial difficulties, had previously criticized Cuomo for policies he believed hindered the crypto industry. The shift in leadership raises questions about the future of the city’s digital asset policies; New York is currently a major financial center, and its stance on crypto could significantly impact the broader market, as reported by CoinDesk.

While Mamdani has remained largely silent on the issue, prominent figures in the crypto world have voiced concerns about his rising popularity. Gemini co-founder Tyler Winklevoss described New York City as a “broken kleptocracy,” and US AI and crypto czar David Sacks urged Silicon Valley to recognize what he termed “rising communism” in the city. Cuomo’s campaign aims to capitalize on these sentiments and attract support from the tech community. You can learn more about the mayoral race here.

Voting is scheduled for November 4th, and officials say the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the city’s future approach to digital assets and technological innovation.
