Texas Longhorns Sweep Oklahoma Sooners in Volleyball Red River Rivalry
The University of Texas Longhorns volleyball team defeated the Oklahoma Sooners in a decisive three-set sweep today, continuing their undefeated season and solidifying their position as a national championship contender.
The match, held at Gregory Gymnasium in Austin, saw the Longhorns (15-0, 7-0) overcome a resilient Oklahoma team (12-5, 4-3) with scores of 25-23, 25-19, and 26-24. Early in the first set, Oklahoma briefly took the lead with a 5-0 run, but Texas responded with strong offensive performances from outside hitters Torrey Stafford and Cari Spears, ultimately securing the set 25-23. The Longhorns then dominated the second set, fueled by service pressure and key blocks, winning 25-19. The third set proved the most competitive, going into extra points before Texas closed it out 26-24.
Middle blocker Kelli Jo Burgess led the Sooners with a strong hitting percentage, but Texas’s consistent blocking and efficient offense proved too much to handle. Setter Ella Swindle orchestrated the Longhorn attack effectively, and libero Emma Halter contributed with crucial digs and aces. This victory marks the latest success in a storied rivalry that extends beyond the football field; the Red River Rivalry is a significant tradition in collegiate sports.
