An Unseasonably Early Cyclone
Australia’s official cyclone season runs from November 1 to April 30. Cyclone Fina is already remarkable for its early arrival, placing it among the earliest cyclones on record to approach the mainland. The last comparable event occurred in 1973, when Cyclone Ines made landfall on November 21.
Currently classified as a Category 1 cyclone on the Australian scale, Fina is expected to intensify to a Category 2 system with winds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour.
