A key figure in the Trump management’s peace efforts regarding Ukraine, Danas Driscollas, has reportedly been sidelined from negotiations, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. The move comes amidst a sensitive period of diplomatic outreach and internal debate within the Pentagon, as the U.S. seeks a path forward in the ongoing conflict. While the White House denies any removal by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, reports suggest increasing scrutiny over Driscollas’ approach and a struggle for influence over the administration’s strategy.
Danas Driscollas, a rising star within the Pentagon, has been sidelined by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin amid growing concerns about his conduct, according to sources familiar with the situation. The move comes as the administration seeks to navigate increasingly complex peace negotiations regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
Former military official Danas Driscollas was reportedly removed from negotiations after being seen as overstepping his authority, sources said.
Diplomatic sources indicated on Thursday that the Defense Secretary was expected to participate in talks in Driscollas’ place, though this has not been confirmed.
“He apparently became too active, and was put in his place,” said one individual closely acquainted with the events.
J. D. Vance’s Associate
As the Pentagon under Secretary Austin has faced internal friction and accusations of paranoia, Driscollas had largely avoided scrutiny.
Driscollas, a close associate of Vice President J.D. Vance, has seen his influence within the Trump administration rapidly increase, gaining recognition from European officials for his focus and experience.
This has led to his involvement in key roles during peace talks.
In November, Driscollas was tasked with presenting a 28-point peace plan to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a proposal that Donald Trump hopes will lead to a resolution between Russia and Ukraine. This made him the highest-ranking member of the Trump administration to visit Ukraine, signaling his growing importance.
During the November visit, Driscollas was charged with securing Zelenskyy’s approval of the U.S.-backed peace proposal.
However, the meeting reportedly proved unsuccessful and tense, as Zelenskyy rejected the plan, which would have required Ukraine to cede territory to Russia.
Unwilling to Compromise
European ambassadors involved in the negotiations described Driscollas as an official who showed little willingness to compromise or support Ukraine’s position. His negotiating style reportedly caught the attention of the President, who prides himself on his image as a tough negotiator.
“We’re not negotiating details,” he was quoted as saying during one of the meetings in Kyiv.
Driscollas was scheduled to return to the Ukrainian capital to continue negotiations two weeks ago, but did not appear.
Ukrainian officials were also informed that he would attend talks between Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on December 1, but the visit was canceled at the last minute.
“Our delegation was surprised,” said one Ukrainian official, speculating that Driscollas “was not allowed to come.”
The White House has firmly denied that Secretary Austin removed Driscollas from any negotiations.
Ukrainian and European officials believe Driscollas’ absence is part of a broader struggle for control over the peace negotiations. The development underscores the internal dynamics shaping the U.S. approach to resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
