Valve is rolling out a major update too its team-based shooter Deadlock, adding six new characters and a new game mode to the beta title. Currently accessible only to players who received an invitation from a Steam friend, the update marks the most significant expansion for the game since its 2024 launch. Players will have a hand in determining the release order of the new heroes, and can begin voting January 26th.

Valve is rolling out a substantial update to its still-in-beta multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) shooter, Deadlock, adding six new playable characters and a revamped game mode. While Deadlock has been available to players since 2024, access has been limited to those with a unique “golden ticket” invitation from a Steam friend, keeping it somewhat under the radar.

The “Old Gods, New Blood” update represents the most significant expansion to Deadlock yet. Players will soon be able to vote on the release order of the six new heroes, mirroring the launch process used for previous characters like Mina, Billy, Paige, Victor, Drifter, and The Doorman. The roster of newcomers is diverse, ranging from Silver, a werewolf shapeshifter, to Rem, a sleepy feline. Also joining the fray are Venator, a vampire hunter; Celeste, an unicorn-like character; Graves, an undead sorceress; and Apollo, a character described as resembling a figure from online fan fiction.

Valve plans to release two new heroes each week, beginning the week of January 26. Players can participate in the voting process by playing matches in either the standard Deadlock mode or the newly introduced “Street Brawl” mode. Street Brawl is a fast-paced 4v4 game type where players select three items per round and compete in a best-of-five match within the game’s urban environments.

The update also brings changes to the game’s “loaners,” with Amber Hand being rebranded as Hidden King, a shadowy figure dwelling in the city’s underbelly, and Sapphire Flame becoming The Archmother, a being embodying pure order seeking to restore balance. Both new protectors will significantly alter the base layouts. Detailed changes to the maps can be found here.

As Deadlock continues to expand its character list and visual fidelity, anticipation is building for a full public release. Some speculate that the launch could coincide with the release of the Steam Machine, currently slated for release this year. The ongoing development of Deadlock demonstrates Valve’s continued experimentation within the competitive gaming landscape, and its unique approach to beta access has fostered a dedicated community.
