A 96-year-old man was struck and killed by a tram on Sunday afternoon in Vienna’s Simmering district near the Central Cemetery.

The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. On Simmeringer Hauptstraße in the area of the Zentralfriedhof 1. Tor stop. According to emergency responders, the man attempted to cross the tram tracks when he was hit by a Line 71 streetcar.

Despite the tram driver initiating an emergency brake, the collision could not be avoided. The impact caused life-threatening injuries, and resuscitation efforts by Vienna’s professional emergency services were unsuccessful.

Multiple emergency vehicles, including a physician-staffed helicopter (Notarzthubschrauber C9), responded to the scene. Police similarly arrived to begin an investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash.

Officials confirmed the man died at the site. The tram driver is receiving psychological support from a crisis intervention team operated by Vienna’s public transit authority.

The incident has drawn attention to pedestrian safety around high-traffic transit zones, particularly near major landmarks like the Central Cemetery, where foot and tram traffic frequently intersect.
