Colima state health authorities are launching an intensified mosquito control campaign across five municipalities beginning today, January 5th, as concerns grow over rising dengue fever risk. The initiative comes after a recent spike in probable cases and increased mosquito larvae counts identified through ongoing surveillance . Crews will concentrate efforts in specific neighborhoods within Colima, Villa de Álvarez, Armería, and Manzanillo, employing larvicides and public education programs centered around eliminating potential breeding grounds.

Health officials will intensify mosquito control efforts in several municipalities beginning Monday, January 5, and continuing through Friday, January 9, in response to ongoing dengue fever risk. The initiative targets areas where probable cases have been identified and mosquito larvae counts in surveillance traps are high, according to the Secretary of Health.

Teams will focus on the Mirador de la Cumbre II neighborhood in Colima municipality, Punta Diamante in Villa de Álvarez, Periquillos and Flor de Coco in Armería, as well as Santa Carolina and Las Torres in Manzanillo. Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, life-threatening complications; proactive control measures are crucial for public health.

Control measures will include emptying and covering containers that collect water, applying larvicide to standing water sources, and promoting preventative actions based on the “Lava, tapa, voltea y tira” (Clean, cover, turn over, and throw away) strategy. This comprehensive approach aims to eliminate breeding grounds for the mosquito that transmits dengue fever.
