real Betis suffered a decisive 5-1 defeat to league-leading Real Madrid on Sunday, a result that significantly impacts their pursuit of a european qualification spot in La Liga.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini openly criticized his team’s defensive shortcomings following the match, specifically citing uncharacteristic errors on set pieces as pivotal to the loss.
The setback marks the second time this season Betis has conceded five goals, raising concerns about defensive consistency as they navigate a competitive league schedule.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Pellegrini highlighted a promising return to form for midfielder Giovanni Lo Celso.
Manuel Pellegrini, manager of Real Betis, expressed deep disappointment following his team’s 5-1 defeat to Real Madrid, stating the loss “hurts a lot.” Pellegrini pinpointed costly errors on set pieces as a major factor in the outcome and emphasized the need for his squad to quickly move past the result.
“This defeat hurts a lot and we need to put it behind us as quickly as possible. We are still within striking distance of fifth place and remain in contention in all competitions,” Pellegrini told reporters after the match.
“It was a very negative assessment overall. There were moments in the game where the scoreline didn’t accurately reflect what was happening, with them scoring two goals from unchallenged headers,” he analyzed.
“What bothers me the most is conceding two goals from set pieces – they can happen, but not with players heading the ball in completely unmarked. That throws everything off balance. They started the better side for the first 20 minutes, but we were the better team in the second half, even if it didn’t translate to the scoreboard. Their two goals effectively ended the match. It’s the second time we’ve conceded five goals – the other instance was against Barcelona – and we need to improve in that area,” he continued.
“I don’t think there’s anything positive to take away from this. The team does have the personality to go for the win, that’s for sure. Playing Real Madrid toe-to-toe and losing is understandable; but I’m frustrated that we gifted them two goals from corners and our own corners ended up in Courtois’ hands,” Pellegrini added.
Despite the overall disappointment, Pellegrini praised the second-half performance of Argentinian midfielder Giovanni Lo Celso, who is working his way back to full fitness following a recent injury that sidelined him in late November and early December.
“He came on very well, with good attacking energy, making dangerous passes and hitting the woodwork. He’s been training well and the team has been in good form. I’m very pleased with his 45 minutes,” Pellegrini noted.
The defeat leaves Betis needing to regroup quickly as they continue their push for a European qualification spot in La Liga. Lo Celso’s return to form offers a boost as the team navigates a challenging schedule.
