Zach Bryan Song Lyrics Draw Criticism from Homeland Security

Country music star Zach Bryan is facing scrutiny from the Department of Homeland Security after releasing a snippet of an unreleased song containing lyrics referencing law enforcement and ICE raids.

Yesterday, Bryan posted a portion of a track, reportedly titled “Bad News,” to his Instagram account, singing, “I heard the cops came/Cocky motherfuckers, ain’t they?” and “And ICE is gonna come bust down your door/Try to build a house that no one builds no more/But I got a telephone/Kids are scared and all alone.” Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of public affairs for the United States Department of Homeland Security, responded today, telling TMZ that Bryan should “stick to ‘Pink Skies,’” a song from his 2024 album, The Great American Bar Scene.

The controversy arises as the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has increased its activity under a second Trump administration, conducting raids and mass deportations across the country. This increased enforcement has sparked debate about the impact on communities and families. Notably, following the announcement of Bad Bunny’s performance at Super Bowl LX, DHS advisor and campaign manager Corey Lewandowski stated ICE agents would be present at the event.

Bryan’s lyrics tap into a growing national conversation about immigration policy and its effects on individuals and families, a topic explored in depth by reporting on communities directly impacted by ICE actions. Representatives for Bryan have been contacted for comment.

Department of Homeland Security officials have not indicated whether further action will be taken, but reiterated their focus on border security and enforcement of immigration laws.
