York’s Barbican Center hosted a thrilling round of matches in the UK Championship, one of snooker’s most prestigious tournaments, on Friday. Chinese player Ding Junhui secured his spot in the last 16 following a 6-4 victory over compatriot Si Xu, in a match showcasing both established skill and emerging talent. The win continues Ding’s pursuit of a second UK Championship title, after his triumph in 2009, and positions him among the contenders in this year’s event.
Ding Junhui advanced to the last 16 of the UK Championship on December 1, defeating Si Xu 6-4 in a hard-fought match. The UK Championship is one of the sport’s “Triple Crown” events, alongside the World Championship and Masters, and a prestigious title in the snooker world.
Ding jumped out to an early lead, building a 3-1 advantage with breaks of 103 and 66. Xu battled back after the interval, taking the fifth frame after a re-rack on the black, briefly threatening a comeback. He would eventually level the match, but Ding responded emphatically with breaks of 92 and 109 to regain control and move within one frame of victory. Xu mounted a determined effort in the ninth frame, compiling a score of 96, but Ding ultimately closed out the match with a 64, securing his place in the next round.
Ding will now await the winner of the match between Mark Allen and Scott Donaldson.
Following the match, Ding acknowledged a degree of luck in his victory, noting that Xu’s improved form in the later stages made for a tougher contest. He also expressed his delight at seeing four Chinese players competing in the major tournaments, highlighting the growing strength of the nation’s young snooker talent. Reflecting on his career, Ding stated he will continue to strive for more wins, and even if further championships prove elusive, he intends to enjoy the game. “I will try my best to win more victories,” he said. “Even if I can’t win more championships, I can still enjoy the game.”
