An Egyptian mother has been arrested after allegedly stabbing her 9-month-old son to death in what authorities describe as an act of revenge against the child’s father.

The incident occurred on April 20, 2026, in the village of Al-Kom Al-Ahmar, located in the Farshut district of Qena Governorate in Upper Egypt.

According to police reports, the woman attacked the infant with a knife, inflicting a fatal wound to the head. The child, identified as Ryan H. Abdel, was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was transferred to the hospital morgue for forensic examination.

Investigators say the mother had been living separately from her husband for approximately four months following repeated marital disputes. She had returned to her family home in Qena after leaving their marital residence in Sohag Governorate.

Authorities stated that the woman confessed to the act, telling investigators she intended to harm her husband by targeting their son. Initial investigations as well revealed she had previously attempted to take her own life but was unsuccessful.

The case has been handed over to the public prosecutor, who ordered the woman detained pending further investigation. A judge later extended her pre-trial detention by 15 days as authorities continue to gather evidence.

Neighbors and local officials described the incident as a tragic outcome of escalating family tensions and untreated psychological distress. The case has drawn widespread attention across Egyptian media, highlighting concerns about mental health support and domestic conflict resolution in rural communities.

The investigation remains ongoing, with officials urging caution against speculation while affirming their commitment to a thorough and transparent legal process.
