Eindhoven Airport temporarily halted all flights Saturday evening following the detection of multiple drones in its airspace, raising immediate security concerns [[1]]. The disruption, which impacted both civilian and military traffic at the airport – located near a major Dutch airbase – highlights a growing vulnerability of critical infrastructure too unmanned aerial systems. This incident follows a similar occurrence just the night before at Volkel Air Base, signaling a potential escalation in drone-related security threats across the Netherlands [[2]]. Flights resumed late Saturday, but the events are prompting questions about the effectiveness of current counter-drone measures.

Eindhoven Airport briefly suspended operations Saturday evening after multiple drones were spotted in the vicinity, disrupting both civilian and military air traffic. Flights resumed shortly after 11:30 p.m. local time, but the incident underscores growing concerns about drone interference with critical infrastructure.

Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans stated that the Dutch military deployed “counter-drone measures” at the airport to address the situation. Police and the Royal Marechaussee, the Netherlands’ national gendarmerie, were also present.

Airport authorities reported delays and potential cancellations due to the airspace disruption. Passengers were informed that flights were being rerouted to airports in Weeze, Rotterdam, and Brussels.

A spokesperson for Eindhoven Airport confirmed that all departures and arrivals were halted around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. The presence of a military airbase on the airport grounds also led to a temporary suspension of military flights.

Flights Resume

Flight operations resumed at 11:11 p.m. “The drones created a dangerous situation,” said Raissa Broeren, a spokesperson for the Royal Netherlands Air Force. “We take disruptions to air traffic very seriously and do not want to take any risks. Therefore, we took measures.” Broeren confirmed that multiple drones were involved, but declined to specify the exact number.

Minister Brekelmans shared on X that the Defense Ministry is currently unable to release details about the specific actions taken for security reasons.

The incident follows a similar event Friday evening, when drones were detected near Volkel Air Base. In that instance, the military attempted to use weapons to disable the drones, according to reports.
