Climate Expert Quits Presidential Council Over EU Strategy Referendum

Andrzej Guła, the founder of the Polish Smog Alarm, has resigned from the presidential Energy and Natural Resources Council, citing a fundamental disagreement over a proposed referendum on the European Union’s climate strategy.

The resignation stems from Guła’s opposition to the “single-question formula” being proposed for the referendum. This departure underscores growing tensions regarding how the nation’s climate and energy future is being presented to the public.

The president’s push for the referendum has sparked sharp political backlash. Zandberg criticized the move, describing the president’s decision as “unserious treatment of citizens.”

Further criticism has been directed at Karol Nawrocki. In a recent discussion, Lewicka claimed that Nawrocki’s approach suggests he “considers the nation as dark people.” This sentiment was echoed in an opinion piece in Newsweek, which argued that Nawrocki’s current strategy “makes no sense” and is designed solely “to heat up the dispute.”

The controversy extends beyond political rhetoric to expert skepticism. Some analysts have characterized the president’s desire for a referendum as a repeat of previous political maneuvers, describing the effort as “OZE-sroze bis.”

The resignation of a key climate expert like Guła highlights the deepening divide between the administration’s strategic approach to EU climate policy and the technical experts tasked with advising on energy and natural resources.
