After a decade of leadership, Elza Pais is stepping down as head of the Women Socialists (MS-ID). The upcoming leadership election is now a two-way race between Carla Eliana Tavares, a former member of parliament, and La Salette Marques, a national leader within the Socialist Party. This transition comes after initial interest from four candidates, but Gabriela Canavilhas and Alexandra Tavares de Sousa have since withdrawn from contention.

Carla Eliana Tavares brings a background in law and advocacy to the race, currently serving as President of the Aveiro Federation of Women Socialists. Her profile on the Socialist Party’s website as well notes her role as a member of the party’s National Commission and her previous service as a Deputy.

The election is significant as it marks a change in direction for the MS-ID, a key organization within the broader Socialist Party. Tavares’ campaign is focused on advancing equality, according to her Facebook page.

The departure of Pais after ten years signals a period of potential renewal for the Women Socialists, and the outcome of the election will likely shape the organization’s priorities in the coming years. According to reports from PÚBLICO, the candidates are focused on connecting with their base and listening to the concerns of society.
