The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued an urgent warning about a sharp rise in measles cases across the Americas, urging countries to intensify vaccination efforts to prevent further spread.

According to PAHO, the number of confirmed measles cases in 2026 has already surpassed the total reported for all of 2025, signaling a troubling acceleration in transmission. The organization emphasized that two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MPR) vaccine are essential for effective protection against the highly contagious disease.

PAHO and the World Health Organization (WHO) continue to support Suriname and other countries in the region in strengthening immunization programs and improving epidemiological surveillance. Health officials stress that timely vaccination remains critical, especially for young children who are most vulnerable to severe outcomes.

The call to action comes ahead of Vaccination Week in the Americas, an annual initiative aimed at closing immunization gaps and boosting public awareness about vaccine-preventable diseases. PAHO recommends targeted vaccination campaigns, enhanced case detection, and rapid response to outbreaks—particularly in anticipation of large international gatherings such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where increased population movement could heighten transmission risks.

While specific measles vaccination coverage data for Suriname remains limited, PAHO notes that immunization rates across the Americas continue to fall below the recommended 95% threshold needed to prevent community spread. Achieving and maintaining high vaccination coverage is vital to stopping outbreaks and protecting populations.

Measles is a preventable but serious infectious disease that can lead to complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and death, particularly in unvaccinated individuals. PAHO reiterates that vaccination is the most effective tool available to control and eliminate the disease.
