Greece Ranks Seventh in Europe for Air Traffic Despite Recent Dip

Greece maintained its position as one of Europe’s busiest airspaces last week, handling an average of 2,089 flights daily between September 29 and October 5, according to data released today by Eurocontrol.

While air traffic in Greece decreased by 8% compared to the previous week, it remains 7% higher than levels recorded in 2024 and a significant 26% above those of 2019. This indicates a continued strong recovery in air travel to and within the country, despite seasonal fluctuations. The recent decline is largely attributed to the transition to fall flight schedules and a typical decrease in tourism as the summer season ends, impacting airlines focused on island and holiday destinations.

Eurocontrol’s report also revealed that Greece accounted for 11% of all flight delays across Europe during the same period. Efficient air traffic management is crucial for the Greek economy, which heavily relies on tourism and connectivity – learn more about European airspace capacity at Eurocontrol’s website. Delays can have a ripple effect on the tourism sector and broader economic activity, as highlighted in recent reports from the International Air Transport Association.

Officials anticipate that air traffic will continue to adjust with the changing seasons, and are working to mitigate delays and improve overall airspace efficiency.
