Max Verstappen clinched victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix Saturday night, a result which significantly boosts his championship aspirations as the formula 1 season heads to its penultimate race.the race saw McLaren’s Oscar Piastri struggle to maintain position after qualifying fifth, ultimately facing disqualification alongside teammate Lando Norris due to technical infringements. The outcome of the race – and a shift in championship focus from Piastri to Norris as a rival to Verstappen – underscores the high stakes as drivers compete for points in the closing stages of the 2024 season.
Oscar Piastri entered the race 24 points behind teammate Lando Norris, needing a strong weekend to bolster his championship hopes. The Las Vegas Grand Prix is a crucial event as the Formula 1 season nears its conclusion.
Piastri, who started fifth after sacrificing his final lap in Q3, struggled to make significant progress throughout the race and ultimately finished where he began, in fifth place.
He was initially promoted to fourth due to a five-second penalty assessed to Kimi Antonelli, but was later disqualified alongside Norris due to excessive wear on the floor of both cars – exceeding the limits permitted by regulations.
Max Verstappen secured his victory in Las Vegas, effectively guaranteeing his entry into the penultimate round of the season with a strong chance at claiming the championship title.
With Verstappen closing the gap in points to the McLaren drivers, former champion Jenson Button revealed that Norris views Verstappen as the “primary championship rival,” effectively diminishing Piastri’s title aspirations.
Button told Sky Sports F1:
“The championship is still very, very difficult, but if Max continues to perform like this, there’s definitely a chance.”
He added, “I think Lando is comfortable looking at the championship.”
Button concluded, “But he sees Max as the main competitor now, not Oscar.”
