A demo is now available for the upcoming survival horror game, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, ahead of its launch on March 12, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2.
The remake places players in the role of Mio Amakura, the younger of twin sisters who become lost in the abandoned village of Minakami, a location rumored to have vanished without a trace. Mio possesses the ability to perceive the presence of ghosts, and the game centers around a chilling experience as players navigate the unsettling environment.
Players will utilize the Camera Obscura to pacify spirits and explore the derelict buildings, benefiting from redesigned combat and exploration elements. The original Fatal Frame 2 debuted in 2003 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, and later received a version for Wii in 2012. This remake builds on the legacy of the franchise, leveraging the enhanced Katana engine, restructured character models, and improved lighting.
The story follows Mio and her sister Mayu Amakura as they are drawn to Minakami by a crimson butterfly, a village steeped in tales of disappearances and an ancient ritual. The Camera Obscura, a device capable of seeing and exorcising spirits, is central to the narrative. The fate of the sisters is determined by player choices, with multiple endings available.
A collaboration with Silent Hill f is also planned, with special costumes to be added as free downloadable content in a future update. The enduring popularity of the survival horror genre continues to drive innovation in atmospheric storytelling and immersive gameplay.
