Karolina Pliskova Ends 2025 Season Following Ankle Injury Setback
Former Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova announced today she will not compete for the remainder of the 2025 WTA season, just weeks after returning to the tour following a year-long recovery from an ankle injury.
The Czech player revealed her decision on Instagram, stating, “It felt so good to finally compete again, but this year has been a tough one overall, and my body still needs more time to adapt. So that’s it for 2025 — see you all next season! Thank you so much for all the love and support, always.” Pliskova initially sustained the ankle injury at the 2024 US Open and returned to action at the Caldas da Rainha Ladies Open in September, where she secured one victory before a second-round loss.
Her comeback was short-lived, with a straight-sets defeat to Lina Gjorcheska at the Samsun Open in Turkey marking her final match of the season. Currently ranked 1051st in the world, Pliskova previously reached the number one ranking, demonstrating the impact of this latest setback on her career trajectory. This adds to a growing list of injured players as the WTA season nears its close, potentially affecting the competitive landscape of upcoming tournaments like the WTA Finals.
Pliskova’s withdrawal follows similar announcements from other WTA stars, including Daria Kasatkina, who recently cited both physical and emotional exhaustion, and Qinwen Zheng, who is battling another elbow injury. WTA officials have not yet commented on the rising number of player injuries, but the situation raises concerns about the demands placed on athletes during the extended tennis season.
