Actor Frank Dillane has garnered critical acclaim and a major award for his performance in the independent film Urchin, signaling a potential turning point in his career as he begins to receive more prominent role offers.
Dillane, 34, recently won the Un Certain Regard best-actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of Mike, an unhoused Londoner struggling with sobriety in Urchin, which hits select U.S. theaters today. The film, directed by Harris Dickinson, has been praised for its raw emotion and Dillane’s nuanced performance. “Harris really pushed me to my limits, which I appreciated,” Dillane said, describing the collaborative process as “very childish in many ways, as in: We really explored and really played. We would go there.”
The actor, son of actors Stephen Dillane and Naomi Wirthner, previously gained recognition for his role in Fear the Walking Dead, a part he ultimately chose to leave in 2018, relocating to Berlin to distance himself from the pressures of fame. He explained his decision, stating, “That was a humbling experience. I left the show — and then there’s all of this other stuff that I walked away from, to be brutally honest. This ends up being my life, so what can I say? I’ve lived and I will die.” This move reflects a broader trend of actors prioritizing artistic fulfillment and personal well-being over mainstream success.
Despite his past reservations about the public side of acting, Dillane is now actively auditioning and has upcoming roles in Focus Features’ new adaptation of Sense & Sensibility alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones. He acknowledges a shift in his perspective, noting, “I’m still very sensitive, but I have broader shoulders now — my eyes have been opened.” The increased attention following Urchin could lead to a significant expansion of his career opportunities, potentially positioning him for leading roles in larger productions.
