Lawrence Architecture Firm Creates Memorial Garden for Late Colleague
A downtown Lawrence architecture firm, Multistudio, has unveiled a garden memorializing Jackson Clark, an architect who worked at the firm for nearly 30 years before retiring and passing away in April 2024.
The garden, located behind Multistudio at 706 Massachusetts St., was designed by landscape architect Robert Whitman, a longtime colleague of Clark’s. It features blue grama grass, Montrose White calamint, and Baptisia ‘American Goldfinch,’ all native to the area and intended to benefit local pollinators. Whitman explained that Clark had a deep passion for landscaping, often discussing perennials and even assisting with the measurement of champion trees. “I’d say everyone that works in the office knew how much Jackson loved landscaping,” Whitman said.
Clark’s wife of 35 years, Brigid Murphy, expressed her surprise and gratitude at the outpouring of appreciation for her husband following his death. “It’s just gratifying to be shown how much he was appreciated,” Murphy said, adding that Clark was a “real renaissance man” with a strong belief in building integrity. John Wilkins, a principal at Multistudio, noted Clark’s role as a mentor to many younger architects, bringing a unique maturity to the firm. Architectural design impacts communities for generations, and this garden serves as a lasting tribute to Clark’s influence.
A private reception was held earlier this month to celebrate the garden’s completion, and the space is now open for staff and passersby to enjoy. A bronze plaque created by Schurle Signs honors Clark as a “colleague, mentor and friend.” Multistudio officials stated they hope the garden will serve as a peaceful and reflective space for years to come, honoring Clark’s legacy and passion for the natural world.
