George Clooney Opens Up About Fears and Physical Challenges of Aging at 64

Actor George Clooney recently shared candid reflections on the realities of aging, admitting he’s “not thrilled” with turning 64 and experiencing age-related anxieties about his work and physical capabilities.

In an interview with Esquire, Clooney described feeling nervous during performances of his 2025 play, “Good Night, and Good Luck,” attributing the anxiety to his age. “As you get older, it doesn’t matter how many granola bars you eat; your brain starts to lock up,” he said, adding that he would rehearse the entire play in his dressing room before each show, fearing he might forget his lines. This vulnerability from the typically composed actor offers a relatable perspective on the challenges that come with growing older, even for those who appear to age gracefully.

Despite his concerns, Clooney continues to challenge himself physically, maintaining an active lifestyle. He makes a yearly effort to bike up Mount Bisbino near his Lake Como home “just to make sure I’m not too old,” and recently participated fully in a basketball game at his children’s school family day, keeping pace with parents decades younger. Maintaining physical health is particularly important for Clooney, who became a father to twins, Alexander and Ella, at the age of 56; you can learn more about the impacts of later-in-life parenthood here.

Clooney also expressed a humorous acceptance of his future role as a father watching his children grow. “I’m so much older that the idea that my son would be compared to me is pretty unlikely, because by the time he actually will have done anything, I’m gonna be gumming my bread,” he joked. The actor’s comments come as discussions around ageism in Hollywood and beyond continue to gain traction; read more about ageism in the workplace from AARP.

Clooney is expected to continue balancing his acting career with family life and his philanthropic work, and has not commented on any further plans to address his age-related anxieties.
