Google maps is undergoing a meaningful update, replacing its existing assistant with Google’s gemini AI model to offer users a more conversational and integrated navigation experience. The rollout, which began in late November, marks a notable expansion of Gemini’s capabilities beyond standalone apps and into a widely-used platform relied upon by billions globally [[2]]. This integration aims to streamline in-car and on-the-go tasks, allowing for more hands-free control and seamless interaction with the app [[3]]. Google Maps is set to integrate Google’s Gemini AI model, replacing the existing assistant and offering users a more versatile navigation experience.

The rollout of this new functionality began this month, and some users are already seeing the change – the traditional four-color icon is being swapped for the Gemini logo.

How it works

The new AI assistant will function across all navigation modes, including driving, cycling, walking, and public transportation. Users can activate it simply by saying “Hey Google.” The assistant is designed to handle practical commands such as starting or stopping routes, avoiding toll roads, displaying alternative routes, and providing estimated arrival times. Gemini can also respond to queries about points of interest along your route, and even handle follow-up questions.

For example, users can search for a restaurant, inquire about parking availability, and then immediately begin navigation – all in a single conversational flow. The integration extends to calendar management, allowing users to add appointments while on the move. This integration represents a significant step toward more intuitive and integrated in-car experiences.

Beyond navigation, users will also be able to report traffic incidents, and continue to access existing assistant features like making calls, sending messages, controlling music, and summarizing emails. Essentially, the update brings the full Gemini experience directly into Google Maps.

Coming ‘in the coming weeks’

Google states that the feature will be broadly available on both Android and iOS devices “in the coming weeks,” though the update is currently being deployed sporadically.
