Columbia Sportswear Launches Halloween Campaign Featuring the Grim Reaper

Columbia Sportswear today unveiled a unique Halloween marketing campaign centered around the concept of product durability, featuring the Grim Reaper and a jacket designed to “outlive you.”

The campaign, titled “Death Wishes” and created by Adam & Eve/DDB London, encourages followers to share their near-death experiences for a chance to win a limited-edition Powderkeg II Remastered Interchange jacket. A 60-second social media spot depicts the Reaper promoting the jacket, stating, “Columbia makes its gear so tough it can outlive you. That’s why they stitched a Will and Testament into the lining.” Influencers will also receive the jacket in a custom coffin box signed by the Reaper.

According to Matt Sutton, head of marketing at Columbia, the idea stemmed from frequent customer stories about Columbia jackets being passed down through generations. “This idea came from real stories we receive frequently from people telling us that their Columbia jackets are being passed down from one generation to the next,” Sutton said. “We wanted to celebrate this in a way only Columbia would, by adding a Will & Testament to one of our most iconic styles and enlisting the Grim Reaper to bring it to life – or death, in this case.” This campaign builds on Columbia’s existing “Engineered for whatever” platform, which focuses on the unpredictable nature of the outdoors – learn more about Columbia’s brand philosophy.

Ant Nelson, chief creative officer at Adam & Eve/DDB London, explained the campaign aims to showcase the durability of Columbia’s gear with “trademark irreverence,” adding that Halloween provided “the perfect hook” for the product launch. The move highlights a growing trend of brands utilizing unconventional marketing strategies to capture attention in a crowded digital landscape, as reported by Marketing Dive.

Columbia officials stated they will continue to monitor submissions for the contest and anticipate a strong response to the limited-edition jacket release.
