Elon Musk Launches Grokipedia, Rival to Wikipedia

Elon Musk appears to have launched Grokipedia, an alternative to the popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia, yesterday.

Grokipedia.com went live Monday afternoon, featuring a search bar on a dark background and a font style similar to Wikipedia and ChatGPT. The website, currently in “version v0.1,” lists 885,279 articles, significantly fewer than Wikipedia’s 7,081,705 English-language articles as of today. This move comes as Musk has repeatedly voiced concerns about perceived bias on Wikipedia.

Musk first announced the project last month on X, stating that it was a “necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe” and a “massive improvement over Wikipedia.” He has previously criticized Wikipedia, accusing it of harboring liberal viewpoints and even suggesting it be “defunded until balance is restored.” In 2019, he described his own Wikipedia page as a “war zone.” Early users reported errors with the site, and a review of an entry about Musk revealed inaccuracies – incorrectly stating that Vivek Ramaswamy remained prominent in the DOGE community after leaving in January.

Representatives for Musk, X, xAI, and Wikipedia have not yet responded to requests for comment. The launch of Grokipedia is the latest in a series of efforts by Musk to challenge established platforms, and could potentially reshape how information is accessed and verified online. Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia’s cofounder, has previously expressed skepticism about AI-driven knowledge platforms, suggesting they are prone to errors; you can learn more about Wikipedia’s history and mission on their official website.

Musk and xAI have pledged to address errors and continue refining Grokipedia, aiming to “rewrite the entire corpus of human knowledge.”
