Prunella Scales, ‘Fawlty Towers’ Star, Dies at 93

Prunella Scales, celebrated for her iconic role as Sybil Fawlty in the British sitcom Fawlty Towers, has died at the age of 93.

Scales passed away “peacefully at home in London yesterday,” according to a statement released by her sons, Samuel and Joseph. Remarkably, they shared that she was watching Fawlty Towers the day before her death. She had been living with vascular dementia, a diagnosis she received in 2013. Her portrayal of the sharp-tongued hotelier remains a defining moment in British comedy, influencing generations of sitcom characters.

“Our darling mother Prunella Scales died peacefully at home in London yesterday. She was 93,” her sons told the PA News agency. “Although dementia forced her retirement from a remarkable acting career of nearly 70 years, she continued to live at home.” Scales’ husband, actor Timothy West, predeceased her, passing away in November of last year. She is survived by two sons, one stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Beyond Fawlty Towers, Scales enjoyed a distinguished career on stage and screen, receiving a Bafta nomination for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett’s 1991 play, A Question of Attribution. Her work spanned decades and encompassed a wide range of roles, demonstrating her versatility as an actress; you can find more about her career here.

The family expressed gratitude for the care Scales received in her final days, noting they were “comfortable, contented and surrounded by love.”
