Halloween Decor Spending Rises Sharply as Holiday Approaches

National spending on Halloween decorations has increased significantly in recent years, with consumers preparing to spend billions this season as they prioritize festive displays.

According to the National Retail Federation, Halloween decor spending has risen 42% from 2019 to 2024, jumping from $2.6 billion to $3.8 billion. Residents in Connecticut are reflecting this trend, with many investing heavily in creating elaborate Halloween scenes. One West Hartford home on North Main Street is known for its extensive yard displays. This increase in spending comes as Halloween continues to grow in popularity as a cultural event, driving demand for increasingly elaborate decorations.

Agatha Tyc of New Britain explained she spent over $500 on decorations this year after recently moving. “I kind of spent over $500 on my Halloween decorations. I go hard, but I did reuse a lot of it,” she said. Makayla Hopkins reported spending at least $300 on decorations and a costume last year. Gus Valenti, whose birthday is October 27, enjoys selecting decorations for his home, including a blowup T. rex skeleton and Snoopy on a jack-o’-lantern. Some are adapting their decorating plans due to unforeseen consequences; Tyc noted she’s using caution tape this year after bees became trapped in her cobwebs. The National Retail Federation predicts continued growth in Halloween spending in the coming years, reflecting the holiday’s enduring appeal. Officials anticipate continued high demand for Halloween decorations through the remainder of the season.
