The agreement underscores a collaborative approach to address housing affordability challenges in the region.

Halmstad, Sweden’s municipal housing company, HFAB, will increase rent by 1.9 percent beginning January 1, 2026, following an agreement reached with the Swedish Tenants’ Association. The planned increase offers long-term stability for both renters and the housing provider in a region facing evolving economic conditions.

HFAB owns and manages approximately 11,000 apartments in the municipality of Halmstad. Rent negotiations for the company’s tenants are conducted between HFAB and the Swedish Tenants’ Association.

Last year, HFAB and the Swedish Tenants’ Association reached a unique agreement outlining a planned annual rent adjustment of 1.9 percent between 2026 and 2030, contingent on inflation – as measured by the KPIF – remaining between 1 and 3.5 percent. With this year’s negotiations complete, the 1.9 percent increase for 2026 aligns with that initial agreement.

“It feels very good that we can fulfill the parties’ plan to create security and long-term stability, both for our tenants and for us as a public utility housing company,” said Christian Kylin, CEO of HFAB. “Knowing that we intend to raise the rent by 1.9 percent for the next four years allows our tenants to plan their housing costs for a long time to come.”

The new rental rates will take effect January 1, 2026, and will be reflected on December’s rent invoices.
