Former Lostprophets Singer Ian Watkins Dies After Prison Attack
Ian Watkins, the former lead singer of Welsh rock band Lostprophets, has died following an assault while serving a 29-year sentence at HMP Wakefield, West Yorkshire Police confirmed today.
Police responded to reports of a serious assault on a prisoner Saturday morning, where Watkins, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two men, aged 25 and 43, have been arrested on suspicion of murder. Watkins was convicted in December 2013 of multiple child sex offences, including the attempted rape of a baby, and his case sparked widespread outrage and a national conversation about protecting vulnerable children.
This is not the first incident involving Watkins during his incarceration; he was previously attacked in August 2023, though those injuries were not life-threatening. A recent report on Wakefield Prison, published earlier this month, highlighted a marked increase in violence and concerns about the safety of prisoners, particularly those convicted of sexual offences. During sentencing, Mr Justice Royce described the case as breaking “new ground” and reaching “new depths of depravity,” noting Watkins’ “complete lack of remorse.” The band Lostprophets, formed in 1997, achieved significant success in the early 2000s, with a number one album in the UK and several top 40 singles; AllMusic provides a comprehensive overview of their discography. A Prison Service spokesperson stated they are unable to comment further while police investigate.
Police investigations are ongoing, and further details are expected to be released in the coming days.
