Illinois Secures Bowl Eligibility with 35-13 Victory Over Rutgers
Illinois defeated Rutgers 35-13 yesterday, achieving bowl eligibility for the second consecutive season – a feat not accomplished since 2010-2011.
Quarterback Luke Altmyer led the Illini (6-3, 3-3 Big Ten) with an impressive performance, throwing for 235 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 88 yards and a touchdown. Hudson Clement, a transfer from West Virginia, had his best game as an Illini, contributing five receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown. “I put us as good as any 6-3 team out there,” said Illinois coach Bret Bielema. “That doesn’t mean anything, but I like this team.”
Rutgers (4-5, 1-5) struggled on both sides of the ball, losing their fifth game in six contests. Athan Kaliakmanis completed 25 of 45 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown for the Scarlet Knights, but the offense couldn’t overcome Illinois’ strong defensive showing. The Illini defense, which had given up 76 points in the previous two games, held Rutgers to just 59 rushing yards. For more on college football standings, visit NCAA.com.
A key moment in the game came late in the second quarter when Altmyer scored a 3-yard touchdown on a trick play. Rutgers coach Greg Schiano acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, stating, “Give credit to Illinois. We didn’t coach well enough and didn’t play well enough, and it starts with me.” Illinois will enjoy a bye week before facing Maryland on November 15, while Rutgers will host Maryland on November 8.
