Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Condom sales in Indonesia have seen double-digit growth in recent years, according to DKT Indonesia, a leading provider of contraceptives including condoms. This increase in condom sales coincides with a trend of young couples delaying or forgoing parenthood.

DKT Indonesia Group Brand Manager Michael Suwito noted that sales growth has remained consistent, despite the market penetration still being considered low.

“For the past several years we have continued to enjoy double digit growth,” he said during a discussion of the ‘Utilize a Condom If You Seek To’ campaign in Jakarta on Friday, February 13, 2026.

However, he emphasized that the national rate of condom use remains relatively small. He explained that various factors, such as culture, religion, social pressure and the stigma surrounding premarital sex, continue to be major obstacles to education and condom purchases.

He even highlighted the phenomenon of consumers feeling embarrassed when buying condoms in stores. “People are still shy about buying them. They wait for the store to be empty, then cover them with a snack so they aren’t seen,” he said.

Condom Sales on Valentine’s Day

DKT also did not observe a significant surge in sales during Valentine’s Day in Indonesia, unlike Western countries where the holiday is often associated with increased sexual activity. Amidst this growth, education about safe sex is increasing alongside greater openness in information sharing on social media.

“the company believes that educational efforts still need to be expanded to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections,” Michael said.

During the same event, DKT Indonesia Clinical Training Manager Dr. Erika Indrajaya affirmed the important public health role of condoms, noting their function extends beyond contraception.

“Condoms have three functions. First, to prevent pregnancy, second, to protect against sexually transmitted infections including HIV, and third, they can help enhance sexual enjoyment given that condom technology has advanced with many variants,” Dr. Erika explained.

She also addressed the practice of some couples relying on the withdrawal method for contraception. According to Dr. Erika, this method carries a significant risk of failure.

“If not done correctly, it’s very easy to fail. Because 18-20% of the time, withdrawal can lead to pregnancy. Assume 1 in 5 [attempts],” she said.

Indonesia is experiencing a notable increase in condom sales, reflecting changing attitudes towards family planning and sexual health. According to data released on February 13, 2026, DKT Indonesia, a major contraceptive provider, has seen double-digit sales growth in recent years.

Michael Suwito, Group Brand Manager at DKT Indonesia, stated that despite this positive trend, condom usage rates nationally remain low. Cultural norms, religious beliefs, social pressures, and the stigma associated with premarital sex continue to hinder both education and access to condoms, he explained.

Suwito also noted a reluctance among consumers to purchase condoms openly, with many waiting for stores to be less crowded and concealing their purchases. “People are still shy about buying them. They wait for the store to be empty, then cover them with a snack so they aren’t seen,” he said.

Interestingly, DKT Indonesia did not observe a significant spike in condom sales during Valentine’s Day, a pattern that differs from trends in Western countries. However, the company believes increased openness about sexual health on social media is contributing to greater awareness, and education.

DKT Indonesia is emphasizing the importance of expanding educational initiatives to reduce unintended pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Dr. Erika Indrajaya, Clinical Training Manager at DKT Indonesia, highlighted the multifaceted benefits of condom use.

“Condoms have three functions. First, to prevent pregnancy, second, to protect against sexually transmitted infections including HIV, and third, they can help enhance sexual enjoyment because condom technology has advanced with many variants,” Dr. Erika explained.

Dr. Indrajaya also cautioned against relying on the withdrawal method as a primary form of contraception, citing a failure rate of approximately 18-20%. This underscores the importance of consistent and correct condom use for effective pregnancy prevention and protection against STIs.

The findings highlight the need for continued public health efforts to address barriers to condom access and promote safe sex practices in Indonesia.
