Conflict in the Middle East
Israel and the United States launched attacks against Iran on February 28, targeting strategic positions within the Islamic regime, including its leadership. The strikes resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, escalating the regional conflict.
President Pezeshkian is currently part of a three-member interim leadership council, serving as the collective head of state until the Assembly of Experts elects a new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Masoud Pezeshkian, a former heart surgeon, assumed the presidency in July 2024.
Since then, Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks on targets associated with Israeli and American interests, particularly in the Persian Gulf.
