Escalating tensions in the Middle East saw Iran claim responsibility for an attack on a U.S.-flagged tanker in the Persian Gulf on Saturday, March 7, 2026. The incident comes amid a broader conflict between the United States and Israel on one side, and Iran on the other, raising concerns about potential disruptions to global shipping lanes.
According to reports from the Iranian news agency Sepah News, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated its forces attacked a tanker named ‘Louise P,’ flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, which they identified as a U.S. Asset. “The tanker with the commercial name ‘Louise P’ flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, one of the assets of the terrorist United States, was attacked by a drone in the middle of the Persian Gulf,” the IRGC said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Israeli military officials claim to have destroyed 16 aircraft belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force during overnight strikes in Tehran, according to reports from Aljazeera. The Quds Force is responsible for Iran’s extraterritorial operations.
In a formal statement, the Israeli Air Force said it launched a “large wave of attacks” on the Iranian capital, including strikes against Mehrabad Airport.
The Israeli military alleges the airport is used by the Quds Force to transfer weapons and funds to militant groups throughout the Middle East, including Hezbollah in Lebanon. These claims have not been independently verified, and Iranian authorities have yet to comment. The development underscores growing regional tensions and the potential for further escalation.
