Tensions are escalating along the Israel-Lebanon border with a recent surge in airstrikes and retaliatory fire. Israeli forces launched strikes Wednesday targeting infrastructure they claim belongs to hezbollah, following a day that saw at least 13 killed in a raid on the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp [[1]]. As the one-year anniversary of a previous ceasefire approaches, the potential for wider conflict remains a notable concern, with both sides trading accusations of violating the existing agreement.

Israeli forces launched two strikes on south Lebanon Wednesday evening, targeting what they said was infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah, following warnings to residents to evacuate buildings. The escalation comes a day after a deadly raid on the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp.
As the one-year mark approaches since a ceasefire ended a year-long war between Israel and Hezbollah, Israeli strikes continue, particularly in southern Lebanon. Israel maintains it is targeting Hezbollah’s efforts to rebuild its military capabilities and has kept forces at five border locations, which Lebanon demands they withdraw from.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently accused Hezbollah of attempting to rearm and rebuild its forces.
The National News Agency reported that Israeli aircraft carried out strikes on the towns of Deir Kifa and Shhour, with low-altitude flights over the eastern sector.
The Israeli military confirmed in a brief statement that it was “attacking terrorist infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.”
Prior to the strikes, the Israeli military issued a warning to residents of buildings in the villages of Deir Kifa and Shhour, demanding they evacuate before the attacks.
The Israeli military subsequently issued new warnings to residents of buildings in the villages of Tireh and Ainata, urging them to evacuate in preparation for strikes targeting “Hezbollah infrastructure.”
Tension and heightened alert are also reported in the Tyre area following Israeli airstrikes on homes in the towns of Shhour and Deir Kifa.
These strikes follow hours after one person was killed and 11 others injured in an Israeli strike on a car in the town of Tireh in southern Lebanon, according to the Ministry of Health.
The Israeli military stated it had killed a Hezbollah operative.
According to the official National News Agency, the deceased was a treasurer for the town’s municipality. The strike occurred while “a university bus” carrying students from the area was passing by, and some of them were injured.
Mutual Accusations of Ceasefire Violations

The Israeli military accused Hezbollah on Wednesday of violating the terms of the ceasefire by attempting to rebuild its capabilities in southern Lebanon, just a few kilometers from the border.
“The Hezbollah terrorist organization is working to restore its capabilities in the southern village of Beit Lif, in a blatant violation of understandings between Israel and Lebanon,” the military said in a statement.
It reported monitoring “dozens of terrorist infrastructure sites within the village, including headquarters and weapons depots belonging to Hezbollah,” noting that some of these sites are located inside civilian homes.
Conversely, Lebanon accuses Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement reached under American-French auspices on November 27, 2024, through strikes and maintaining forces within its territory.
Amid fears of escalating tensions, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun recently expressed willingness to negotiate with Israel to halt its raids, but his proposal has not received a response.
The Lebanese government, under American pressure, decided in August to disarm Hezbollah. The army developed a five-phase plan to withdraw weapons, a move rejected by the party, describing the decision as a “sin.”
Wednesday’s strikes come after at least 13 people were killed in an Israeli raid on the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, according to the Ministry of Health.
The Israeli military said it targeted a “training complex” belonging to Hamas, which denied the existence of military facilities belonging to it in the Palestinian camps in Lebanon and described Israel’s accusations as “lies.”
The Israeli military also announced Wednesday that it had killed two Hezbollah operatives in a raid Tuesday evening in southern Lebanon. It stated that the operatives were killed in two separate strikes in the areas of Bent Jbeil and Blida.
