American Men’s Tennis Players Aim to Match Women’s Success at ATP Finals
Turin, Italy – American men’s tennis players Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton are seeking to build on the historic 2025 season enjoyed by their female counterparts, competing at the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in Turin this week.
The success of Madison Keys and Coco Gauff, who won the Australian and French Opens respectively, along with Amanda Anisimova’s runner-up finishes at Wimbledon and the US Open, has inspired Fritz and Shelton to elevate their game. This year marks the first time in 19 years the US has been represented by two singles players at the men’s equivalent event, last occurring in 2006 with Andy Roddick and James Blake. The strong performance of American women this year has ended a decades-long dominance by European players in the sport.
“The women have been really carrying US tennis, so it is time for the men to step up,” Fritz told CNN Sports. Fritz, returning to Turin for a third time, reached the final at Flushing Meadows this year, while Shelton is making his debut after winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Toronto. Shelton’s rise is particularly notable, having finished outside the world’s top 20 last year. For more on the ATP Finals, visit the official ATP Tour website.
Both players are motivated by the opportunity to finish the year as the No. 1 American, but also harbor ambitions of winning major championships. Shelton expressed confidence in the depth and resilience of the American contingent, believing a breakthrough is inevitable. “We have multiple guys at the top of the game and we want to be dominant as a country,” he said. The last American man to win a Grand Slam singles title was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open.
Officials stated that the tournament will continue through the weekend, with the finals scheduled for Sunday, November 16th.
