Jaguar Land Rover has abruptly dismissed its Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern, on December 1, according to reports. The move comes amidst a period of significant upheaval for the British automaker as it navigates a major brand overhaul and transitions to an all-electric future.

The dismissal, which reportedly involved security escorting McGovern from the building, follows a series of challenges for Jaguar Land Rover. Earlier this year, Tata Motors, the parent company, appointed P.B. Balaji as the new head of Jaguar Land Rover, a move widely interpreted as signaling impatience with the Jaguar brand’s experimental direction.

That appointment followed criticism of Jaguar’s rebranding efforts. Initial analysis suggested Balaji, known for his pragmatic approach and success in challenging markets, would likely reverse course on the rebranding. However, Balaji initially stated he would not abandon the rebranding, citing “intriguing” customer reactions.

Shortly after, Jaguar Land Rover experienced a significant cyberattack that disrupted production for a month and a half before being fully resolved. The incident revealed that the company’s IT systems were outdated, dating back to the Ford era.

Currently, Jaguar has ceased vehicle production for over a year as it retools its facilities for the electric vehicle era. The transition has faced early setbacks. McGovern was responsible for the Concept 00, the sole design produced under the new Jaguar branding.

The dismissal of McGovern underscores the pressure on Jaguar Land Rover to deliver on its ambitious electrification strategy and revitalize the Jaguar brand. The company’s struggles highlight the challenges facing legacy automakers as they adapt to the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
