Presidential candidate Jorge Nieto has issued a stern warning against the use of the word “fraud” without supporting evidence, arguing that such claims jeopardize national stability and undermine democratic institutions. The friction comes as the 2026 Peruvian elections enter a critical phase, with candidates fighting for a spot in the second round.

Nieto specifically targeted Rafael López Aliaga following allegations of electoral fraud, telling the rival candidate to either “provide proof or be quiet.” This confrontation underscores the high stakes of the current race, where tensions are escalating as the final tallies are processed.

Addressing the broader impact of these accusations, Nieto stated that claiming fraud without evidence “does damage to the country” and “generates more chaos, uncertainty, and anxiety.” He urged his opponents and the public to stop “destroying our institutions” and called for patience until the electoral process is officially closed.

The race remains highly competitive. According to a quick count by Datum, Keiko Fujimori, Rafael López Aliaga, and Jorge Nieto are currently leading the polls. Fujimori specifically headed the Datum Flash Electoral.

Despite the polling data, Nieto has maintained a cautious stance. Following a report on tally sheets from the ONPE, he noted that the outcome remains uncertain, stating that “the coin is in the air.” The candidate, representing the “Buen Gobierno” platform, remains a viable contender for a spot in the second round.

Nieto has urged all parties to wait for the official quick count and results from the National Jury of Elections (JNE) before drawing conclusions.
