Former Maryland Star Julian Reese Signs with Toronto Raptors
Former Maryland center Julian Reese signed with the Toronto Raptors today, October 17, 2024, seeking to continue his basketball career after going undrafted in the recent NBA draft.
The deal is reportedly an “Exhibit 10” contract, which means it is non-guaranteed and Reese will likely begin his professional journey with the Raptors 905, Toronto’s G League affiliate. This provides Reese an opportunity to prove his NBA potential through performance in the G League. Reese finished his collegiate career ranked second in Maryland history with 1,015 rebounds and is one of only two players in program history to reach both 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
During his final season with the Terrapins, Reese averaged 13.3 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game, leading the Big Ten with 107 offensive rebounds. He helped lead Maryland to its first Sweet 16 appearance in a decade before falling to eventual national champion Florida. “I’m just kind of grateful I was able to be a part of a program like this,” Reese said after the season. “This is a blessing to be a part through the ups and downs.” His versatility as a big man was also highlighted at the Portsmouth Invitational, where scouts noted his ability to guard multiple positions, as detailed by Hoops Hype.
Reese’s path to the NBA wasn’t straightforward, as he entered the transfer portal seeking a fifth year of eligibility, which ultimately didn’t materialize. He then participated in the Los Angeles Lakers’ Summer League team, but saw limited playing time. For more on the Terrapins, see Inside Maryland Sports. The Raptors will evaluate Reese’s progress in the G League with the possibility of a future NBA call-up.
