Nileshwaram, Kerala – A posthumous PhD degree was recently awarded to M. Ramachandran by Kannur University, recognizing years of dedicated research in civil engineering. The unusual honor comes after his family persistently pursued the completion of his doctoral studies following his unexpected death.

Ramachandran passed away in June 2021 due to a heart attack, shortly before he could officially receive his PhD. His wife, V. Jayalakshmi, contacted officials at the Department of Technical Education and Kannur University to ensure his work would be recognized. Following her advocacy, the university resumed the process, and a committee recommended awarding Ramachandran the degree in October 2024.

The university syndicate approved the posthumous degree, a testament to Ramachandran’s commitment to his research. Throughout his career, he worked as an engineer for the Water Authority, the Public Works Department, and ultimately retired as Chief Engineer at the Kerala Police Housing and Construction Corporation. He completed his research while working full-time.

Ramachandran was the second of four children, born to Balakrishnan Nair and Thampayi Amma. His sister, Dr. M. Rama, a former principal of Kasargod Government College, recalled his resourcefulness growing up without electricity, often relying on streetlights and temple lamps for illumination. He is survived by his wife, Jayalakshmi, who resides in Bangalore, and their two sons, Akshay Ram and Advait Ram.
