Katharina Mezgolits of Eisenstadt has begun her fourth season of speed skating, and is finding success in the sport.
Katharina Mezgolits is well-known as one of Austria’s top speed skaters, but the Eisenstadt native has also been competing on the ice for the past four years. The 19-year-old has already proven herself multiple times this season, achieving top-ten finishes in all four events at the Junior World Cup in Italy. She particularly excelled in the 500-meter sprint and the mass start, securing two sixth-place results. “I’m satisfied with this World Cup weekend and was able to improve almost all of my times,” Mezgolits told ORF Burgenland.
Mezgolits: “There’s still more in me”
Despite her strong performance, Mezgolits believes there’s room for technical improvement, especially in the middle distances like the 1,500 meters. “I feel like there’s more I can show than I have so far,” she said. This year, the 19-year-old has also moved up to the under-23 age group, meaning she’s facing even tougher competition.
The competitions in Italy marked the final international events of the calendar year for Mezgolits. She will now head to Innsbruck for the Austrian National Championships just before the end of the year, a near-home competition as the Eisenstadt resident lives in Innsbruck during the speed skating season.
