Indonesia’s Ministry of Health has launched a series of coordinated public health actions in response to a significant rise in measles cases reported early in 2026, including a restructuring of public communication strategies and a targeted immunization campaign for healthcare workers.

According to the Ministry of Health, the revamp of its public communication approach aims to strengthen outreach and transparency as part of broader efforts to contain the outbreak. The initiative comes amid growing concern over the spread of measles, which health officials have noted is more transmissible than COVID-19, urging the public to remain vigilant for symptoms and ensure vaccination status is up to date.

In early 2026, suspected measles cases surpassed 8,000 nationwide, prompting urgent action from provincial health offices. In Aceh Province, the Ministry of Health kicked off a measles and rubella (MR) immunization drive specifically for medical and healthcare personnel, aiming to protect frontline workers and reduce transmission in clinical settings.

The measures follow a meeting between the House of Representatives’ Commission IX and the Minister of Health, during which the surge in cases and national response strategies were discussed. Officials emphasized that timely vaccination and public awareness remain critical to preventing further spread.

Health experts continue to stress that measles is a highly contagious viral disease preventable through vaccination, and that maintaining high immunization coverage is essential to avoid outbreaks, particularly in communities with gaps in vaccine access or hesitancy.
