Alabama’s Five-Star Recruit Keon Keeley Sees Increased Role in SEC Play

Alabama defensive end Keon Keeley, a highly-touted five-star recruit, played a notable 13 snaps during Saturday’s SEC road win against Missouri, signaling a potential turning point in his collegiate career.

Keeley’s playing time came in key moments of a competitive game, a development Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said he was “excited for.” Wommack noted Keeley has been “continually taking steps in the right direction,” adding, “He has a role for us now, and he took advantage of that role on Saturday.” The increased opportunity for Keeley comes as the Crimson Tide navigate injuries to key players at the outside linebacker position, including Qua Russaw and Jah-Marien Latham.

The No. 3 overall recruit in the 2023 class according to 247Sports, Keeley initially joined the program as an outside linebacker under Nick Saban before transitioning to defensive end in the current scheme. Head coach Kalen DeBoer praised Keeley’s patience and potential, stating, “He’s got potential to do some amazing things for us.” DeBoer also highlighted Keeley’s growing comfort level with special teams and his integration into different defensive packages, pointing to a potential for increased impact in the coming weeks. Alabama’s coaching staff expects Keeley to continue building on this momentum, focusing on consistent fundamental execution as he carves out a more significant role within the defense. DeBoer indicated they will continue to build his role each week, hoping to see his impact grow.
