Heavy snowfall in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, has forced the cancellation of downhill training ahead of this week’s FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, raising questions about the event schedule adn course conditions. The postponement follows a decision not to adjust the program to accommodate recent snowboard competitions, a move now met with wry commentary from those familiar with the region’s typically reliable weather. Organizers are working to clear the unprecedented snowfall – nearly three feet fell in 24 hours – while athletes and teams assess the impact on upcoming races, including the potential participation of stars like Ester Ledecká and Lindsey vonn.

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy – Downhill training was canceled Thursday due to heavy snowfall, forcing organizers to pause preparations for the upcoming World Cup races. The postponement comes after a controversial decision not to reschedule events impacted by the snowboard competition.

“Given the heavy snowfall, I expected this,” said one coach. “I mentioned it before the meeting. It was clear to me when the schedule wasn’t adjusted.”

The coach added that knowing the training session was off ahead of time is a positive for everyone involved. “It’s more manageable for the snow removal crews now, rather than having to prepare the course with gates for a jury inspection.”

Cortina d’Ampezzo is typically known for its sunny conditions, making the current weather a surprise. “Maybe this is divine retribution for not moving the snowboard program,” the coach joked. “It’s usually sunny here, and this is the first time I’ve seen snow like this during my visits.”

The possibility of Ester Ledecká competing in the downhill race remains uncertain. “If this weather continues for another three or four days, there might still be a chance,” the coach said with a laugh.

Four Czech skiers are surprisingly listed on the start list for the women’s downhill, a notable showing for the national team. “It’s a bit surprising,” the coach commented. “The downhill course isn’t easy. It will be a tough test for the girls who don’t regularly compete in World Cup events. I only know Bára Nováková; I’ve never seen the other girls in speed disciplines, so I have no idea how prepared they are. Hopefully, they’ll be ready.”

The coach also addressed American star Lindsey Vonn’s decision to compete at the Olympic Games despite a recent injury. “I’m not surprised at all. It was her goal. I know several people who have raced without ACLs, including my brother, who competed like that for seven years. But it wasn’t so soon after the injury. She’s tough, and we’ll see how she manages.”
