Limp Bizkit Bassist Sam Rivers Dies at 48
Sam Rivers, the bassist and founding member of the influential nu metal band Limp Bizkit, has died at the age of 48, a loss that will be felt throughout the music world.
The band announced Rivers’ passing today, October 19, 2025, in a social media post, describing him as “not just our bass player” but “the soul in the sound.” “From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced. His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous,” the band members wrote. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Limp Bizkit, comprised of Fred Durst, John Otto, DJ Lethal, and Rivers, formed in 1994 and rose to prominence with its distinctive blend of hip-hop and rock, becoming a defining act of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The band achieved mainstream success with albums like Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, and hit singles including “Take a Look Around” and “Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle).” Rivers, recognized for his musical talent – earning a Gibson award for Best Bassist in 2000 – previously battled liver disease stemming from excessive drinking, undergoing a liver transplant after becoming sober, as reported by Loudwire.
DJ Lethal, whose real name is Leor Dimant, expressed shock at the news on Instagram, writing, “We are in shock” and requesting privacy for Rivers’ family. He also highlighted Rivers’ charitable work, stating, “You will live on through your music and the lives you helped save with your music, charity work and friendships.” Limp Bizkit recently released the single “Making Love to Morgan Wallen” in September and performed at the Reading Festival in August.
The band has requested privacy for Rivers’ family as they navigate this difficult time.
