Sunderland, enjoying a remarkable resurgence, arrived at Anfield on Wednesday evening with a vocal traveling support. Liverpool, a six-time English champion, were looking to build on a recent win that snapped a frustrating run of form. The newly promoted visitors have quickly found their footing in the Premier League, while Liverpool had ended a nine-game winless streak across all competitions just days prior.

The midweek fixture drew a full house at Anfield, fueled by the excitement of Sunderland’s top-flight return and the enduring appeal of the defending champions. Sunderland supporters made their way into the stadium without incident, and soon the focus shifted to the pitch. All eyes were on Mohamed Salah, who was surprisingly left on the bench for the first time in a home league game this season, wrapped in layers as he took his seat. Milos Kerkez also started on the bench, but Dominik Szoboszlai returned to the midfield, with Joe Gomez again starting at right back.

It didn’t take long for Liverpool to threaten. In the 10th minute, Szoboszlai unleashed a powerful shot towards goal, but Sunderland’s standout goalkeeper, 22-year-old Robin Roefs, was equal to the task. Shortly after, Szoboszlai created an opportunity for Florian Wirtz, but Roefs produced another impressive save, denying the German his first Premier League goal. Sunderland weren’t just defending, however, as Tari Hume fired a long-range effort that Alisson tipped onto the crossbar.

After the break, Liverpool dominated possession, but it was Sunderland who struck first. Chemsdine Talbi unleashed a stunning 25-yard shot that found the bottom corner, giving his side the lead. Liverpool responded with increased urgency, pressing forward and eventually finding an equalizer. Szoboszlai’s pressure forced a turnover, and a pass to Wirtz led to a shot that deflected off Nordi Mukiele and into the net! Initially credited to Wirtz, the goal was ultimately recorded as an own goal.

Despite the late goal, Liverpool’s struggles continue. The draw does little to alleviate the pressure on Arne Slot’s side as they look to climb the Premier League table. 1–1
