As the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) offseason continues, the Navegantes del Magallanes announced a notable addition to their pitching staff Saturday. The team has signed right-handed pitcher Williander Moreno, a player who recently excelled in ItalyS Serie A first division following his release from the Detroit Tigers organization in 2024. This move comes amidst a series of roster adjustments for Magallanes, which has released three Venezuelan players-including two pitchers-since the start of the 2025-2026 championship season.
The Navegantes del Magallanes made a surprising addition to their free agent signings this Saturday as the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) offseason continues to unfold.
Williander Moreno, a pitcher nearing his 27th birthday, has agreed to terms with the Magallanes, according to reports.
Moreno was recently released by the Caribes de Anzoátegui in September. He did not pitch internationally in 2025, which factored into La Tribu’s decision.
However, the Magallanes clearly saw something they liked, extending a contract offer to the right-hander.
The move is somewhat unexpected considering Magallanes has released three Venezuelan players since the start of the 2025-2026 championship season, including two pitchers: Alfred Gutiérrez (now with Bravos de Margarita) and Ángel Hernández (now with Tiburones de La Guaira).
Utility player Edgardo Fermín (now with Tigres de Aragua) was the other player released by the Navegantes.

Williander Moreno previously pitched in the Detroit Tigers’ minor league system through 2023.
While not a strikeout pitcher in the Minors, he displayed promising peripheral numbers, allowing just 2.8 walks and 1.1 home runs per 9.0 innings, while also averaging 7.9 strikeouts over the same distance.
After being released by Detroit in 2024, Moreno headed to Italy, where he excelled with Macerata in the Serie A first division.
In Italy, the newest Magallanes pitcher went 6-2 with a stellar 0.84 ERA and two shutouts last season.
